Hoyme HAC-MBD Manual Balance Damper — set-and-lock locking mechanism
Is this the right product?
✔ Right product if
You need to trim and hold airflow at a fixed restriction — fresh air inlet flow limiting, HRV/ERV balancing, supply or return balance at commissioning — and that restriction needs to stay exactly where you set it.
✗ Not this product if
Automatic pressure response needed → use HAC-BPD Back Pressure Damper

What It Does

The HAC-MBD is a manual inline balancing damper for HVAC duct systems where airflow needs to be set at commissioning and held there permanently. Position the blade to the desired restriction, lock it with the adjustable locking mechanism, and the system stays balanced. No motors, no wiring, no controls — nothing will go wrong with it. A manual balance damper set and locked at commissioning will still be in exactly that position ten years later.

The most common application is fresh air intake flow limiting — setting a maximum fresh air volume to the code-required or design rate and locking it there. HRV and ERV balancing is the other primary application — trimming the higher-flow branch to match the lower flow so heat recovery works correctly and building pressure neutrality is maintained.

Do not lock the blade until final commissioning. Leave the locking mechanism loose through rough-in and startup. Set and lock only at final commissioning with the system running at design conditions using a flow measuring instrument — not by visual blade angle estimate.

Does the HAC-MBD hold its position against duct pressure and vibration?
Yes. The locking mechanism is designed to hold the blade position against normal duct airstream pressure and system vibration. Unlike a balancing register blade that can be bumped open, the MBD locking mechanism requires deliberate disengagement to move the blade. It will stay where it's set.
Can I adjust the MBD after commissioning if the system changes?
Yes — unlock the locking mechanism, reposition the blade to the new balance point, and re-lock. The adjustment is mechanical and takes a few minutes. If the system is modified — new zone added, different HRV installed, fresh air rate requirement changed — the MBD can be readjusted at the time of the modification.
Is the HAC-MBD right for limiting fresh air intake to a code-required maximum?
Yes — this is one of the primary applications. Install the HAC-MBD in the fresh air duct run, set the blade restriction to the code-required maximum fresh air flow rate with the system running at design conditions, and lock it. The fresh air volume is capped at that rate regardless of system pressure variations.
