HAC-F
Motorized Flue
Damper

CSA-certified motorized flue damper for gas and oil appliance vent and flue runs. Spring opens on power loss — the flue path is always clear if the electrical system fails. Relay and end switch included on every unit. Select size only.

Do not substitute a standard HAC on a flue application. A standard HAC fails closed on power loss — the wrong fail-safe direction on a live flue.

Is this the right product?
✔ Right product if
You need a CSA-certified motorized round flue damper on a fuel-burning appliance vent or flue run, sizes 4"–9", with spring-open fail-safe and appliance interlock via end switch.
✗ Not this product if
Sizes 10"–30" required → HAC-F Large Diameter

CSA not required by AHJ → HAC-FS — non-permitted applications only; never substitute on code-required jobs
⚠ Interlock is mandatory
The appliance must not fire until the HAC-F end switch confirms the flue is open. Operating without appliance interlock is a safety risk and a code violation on permitted installations.

THE CRITICAL DISTINCTION

Why a Flue Damper Must Fail Open — Not Closed

A flue damper has one safety-critical requirement that overrides all other specifications: if power is lost while the appliance is firing, the flue path must stay open. This is why the HAC-F exists as a separate product from the standard HAC.

What happens when a flue damper fails closed

A standard HAC uses Power Open / Spring Close action — it opens when powered and springs closed on power loss. On a fresh air or zone control application that is the correct fail-safe: seal the duct when the system is off. On a flue application, that same behaviour is a safety hazard.

If a standard HAC is installed on a flue run and power is interrupted while the appliance is firing, the spring closes the damper and seals the flue. Combustion gases — including carbon monoxide on gas appliances — have nowhere to go. On a gas furnace or boiler the result is CO accumulation in the appliance casing and back-draft risk into the building.

Standard HAC — Power Open / Spring Close

Springs closed on power loss
Flue seals if power fails during appliance operation
Combustion gases trapped — CO accumulation and back-draft risk
Do not install on a flue application — regardless of size or voltage match

HAC-F — Power Close / Spring Open (SPC-F)

Spring-open on power loss — flue path stays clear if electrical system fails
Powers closed in standby — seals flue between heating cycles, reducing standby heat loss
Spring operates without electricity, without control signal, without BMS
CSA certified — 4"–9" confirmed

If you are uncertain about the fail-safe direction required on a flue application, confirm with the appliance manufacturer's installation instructions before proceeding. Do not substitute a standard HAC or any Power Open / Spring Close damper on a flue run.

HAC-F Motorized Flue Damper — Spring Open fail-safe, SPC-F actuator

HOW THE HAC-F INTERLOCK SEQUENCE WORKS

The HAC-F is powered closed in standby — sealing the flue between heating cycles. When the appliance calls to fire, the wiring cuts power to the damper, the spring opens the flue, and the end switch confirms the flue is clear before the firing cycle begins. On power loss at any point, the spring holds the flue open.

1

Appliance at rest

HAC-F is powered closed. Flue is sealed between heating cycles — reducing standby heat loss. Power is continuously applied to hold the damper closed.

2

Appliance calls to fire

Interlock wiring cuts power to the HAC-F closing motor. Spring opens the damper. End switch confirms the damper has reached the open (flue clear) position.

3

ADP releases safety circuit

End switch confirmation received — ADP allows the appliance to fire. If no confirmation signal, appliance stays off.

4

Appliance fires — HAC-F spring-open

Appliance fires with the HAC-F spring-open and power cut — combustion gases vent freely. When the heating cycle ends, power is restored to the HAC-F and the damper closes again. If power fails at any point during the firing cycle, the spring holds the flue open.

Always interlock the HAC-F with appliance controls. Operating a motorized flue damper without appliance interlock is a safety risk and a code violation on permitted installations in most Canadian and US jurisdictions.

Why the end switch is included on every unit

The end switch confirms the HAC-F is in the spring-open (flue clear) position — before the firing cycle begins. The ADP relay adaptor uses this signal to confirm the flue is clear before allowing ignition. A flue damper without an end switch cannot be properly interlocked — the ADP has no position confirmation signal. Rather than create configurations where a contractor could inadvertently order a flue damper without interlock capability, the end switch is included on every HAC-F unit regardless of size.

Why the relay is included on every unit

The relay provides the switched output that feeds the appliance safety circuit or ADP relay adaptor. Together with the end switch it is the hardware that makes the interlock work. A motorized flue damper installed without relay and end switch cannot be properly interlocked with the appliance it serves — which is both a safety risk and a code violation. Both are included on every HAC-F so a complete and safe installation is always possible from a single order.

HAC-F vs HAC-FS — Certification Is Not Optional on Permitted Jobs

The HAC-FS uses the same hardware without CSA certification. On any permitted residential or commercial installation where the AHJ will verify equipment, only the HAC-F satisfies the requirement. The HAC-FS is for non-permitted applications where certification is genuinely not required. Never substitute the HAC-FS on a code-required flue application — the difference between a certified and non-certified flue damper is a documented product qualification an AHJ can and will verify.

CONFIGURATION GUIDE

Size Is the Only Decision

Every HAC-F ships with relay included, end switch included, and Power Close / Spring Open action pre-configured. Match the damper to the flue pipe diameter — that's the only selection required.

1

Confirm flue or vent pipe diameter

Match the HAC-F to the flue or vent pipe diameter exactly. Do not size to the appliance collar — size to the pipe. Undersizing or oversizing affects the seal and blade travel.

HAC-FS — Non-certified only

Do not substitute on code-required jobs. HAC-FS is for non-permitted applications only where the AHJ genuinely does not require certification.

3

Select ADP relay adaptor — by appliance type and system voltage

The HAC-F must be interlocked with the appliance it serves. Select the ADP model based on appliance type and system voltage — not doing so is a code violation and a safety risk on permitted installations.

WHY HOYME

The Right Actuator for the Right Size — Not One Actuator for Everything

The HAC-F uses two different actuators across its size range — not because of cost, but because larger blade areas require more torque than the Hoyme drive is rated for. Each actuator is matched to the torque the application demands.

Hoyme HAC-F 4–9 inch — patented SPC-F spring motor drive
4"–9"

Hoyme Patented SPC-F Drive

The same 24 Vac stall-protected Synchron motor and nylon bearing assembly used across the HAC and HOM lineup — proven in residential and light commercial installations across Canada and the northern US. The SPC-F designation confirms the spring-open fail-safe configuration built into the actuator itself.

Stall-protected — not circuit-protected

Holds against ice load or mechanical obstruction without tripping. Clears the obstruction when conditions change — does not leave the blade in an unknown position.

Serviceable in place

Replacement motor kits, microswitch kits, and spring return kits stocked at Hoyme wholesalers. A motor failure does not require replacing the full HAC-F assembly.

Same drive family as HAC and HOM

One service part across your entire Hoyme specification. Counter staff and service technicians who know the HAC drive know the HAC-F drive.

HAC-F Large Diameter 10–30 inch — Belimo TFB24 actuator
10"–30"

Belimo TFB24 Actuator

At 10" and above, blade surface area increases to the point where the Hoyme drive is not rated for the torque the application demands. The Belimo TFB24 is specified for this size range because it delivers the torque needed to move larger flue blades reliably under the static pressure and temperature conditions of a commercial flue run.

Matched to the torque requirement

Not an upgrade or a downgrade from the Hoyme drive — the actuator matched to what larger blade areas actually demand. The Hoyme drive is right for 4"–9". The TFB24 is right for 10"–30".

Widely stocked through Belimo distributors

On a commercial installation, a failed actuator is not a residential service call — it's a building shutdown. TFB24 availability through Belimo's distribution network is a practical advantage on large commercial jobs.

Field-replaceable without replacing the damper

The TFB24 mounts to the HAC-F damper body and can be replaced in place. A failed actuator does not require replacing the full damper assembly — confirm replacement actuator model matches installed unit before ordering.

2-yr electrical · 10-yr mechanical

Why two actuators instead of one?

As flue pipe diameter increases, blade surface area increases and so does the torque required to reliably open and close the blade against duct static pressure. At 10" and above, the Hoyme drive is not rated for the torque the application demands — specifying it there would be engineering the wrong actuator into a safety-critical installation. The Belimo TFB24 is specified from 10" upward because it delivers what those sizes actually need. The two-actuator approach is the technically correct answer to a torque problem, not a product decision.

COMMON QUESTIONS

HAC-F Motorized Flue Damper FAQs

Questions contractors and counter staff ask most often — answered directly from the product.

Can I use a standard HAC instead of the HAC-F on a flue run? +

No — do not substitute a standard HAC on any flue application.

This is a safety issue, not a preference.

A standard HAC uses Power Open / Spring Close action — it springs closed on power loss. On a flue application, if power is interrupted while the appliance is firing, the spring seals the flue. Combustion gases including carbon monoxide have nowhere to go. On a gas or oil appliance that creates CO accumulation in the appliance casing and back-draft risk into the building.

The HAC-F uses Power Close / Spring Open (SPC-F) action specifically because this is the code-correct fail-safe for a flue damper — the flue path is always clear on any power interruption. Do not substitute a standard HAC on a flue application regardless of size or voltage match.

Why does the HAC-F close when powered — isn't Power Close backwards for a flue damper? +

It seems counterintuitive until you understand the fail-safe logic. The HAC-F is spring-open when there is no power — the flue is always clear when the damper is at rest. The end switch confirms this open position before the appliance is allowed to fire.

Once the end switch confirms the flue is clear and the ADP releases the appliance safety circuit, the appliance fires with the HAC-F spring-open — combustion gases vent freely through the open flue. After the heating cycle ends, power is restored to the HAC-F and the damper closes again, sealing the flue in standby and reducing heat loss between firing cycles.

If power is lost at any point — before, during, or after firing — the spring holds the damper open and the flue stays clear. The fail-safe is always toward an open flue. Power holds the damper closed between calls. The spring is what matters.

Does the HAC-F need to be interlocked with the appliance? +

Yes — always. This is a safety requirement, not a recommendation. The appliance must not fire until the HAC-F end switch confirms the damper is in the spring-open (flue clear) position.

Without ADP interlock, the appliance fires regardless of damper position — which means if the damper fails to open (motor fault, ice load, mechanical obstruction), the appliance fires into a partially or fully obstructed flue. That is the unsafe installation. With proper ADP interlock, the appliance cannot fire unless the end switch confirms the flue is clear.

Operating a motorized flue damper without appliance interlock is a safety risk and a code violation on permitted installations in most Canadian and US jurisdictions. Use an ADP relay adaptor matched to the appliance type and system voltage — see the ADP series page for model selection.

What happens if the HAC-F fails to open when the appliance calls to fire? +

With proper ADP interlock installed, the appliance cannot fire. The ADP relay adaptor holds the appliance safety circuit open until the HAC-F end switch confirms the damper is in the spring-open (flue clear) position. If the damper fails to reach the open position — motor fault, mechanical obstruction, ice load — the end switch does not close, the ADP does not release the safety circuit, and the appliance does not fire.

This is the correct fail-safe behaviour. The system fails safe — the appliance stays off rather than firing into an obstructed flue. This is why interlock is required on every HAC-F installation and why the end switch and relay are included on every unit.

Which ADP relay adaptor do I need for flue damper interlock? +

Select by appliance type and system voltage:

ADP-0MV2-S5A

Gas furnace — millivolt safety system, standing pilot, thermopile or thermocouple (250mVdc–100Vdc). Only model rated for millivolt safety circuits.

ADP-0240-S5A

Gas furnace — 24 Vac electronic ignition. Most common.

ADP-1102-S5A

Boiler or tankless water heater — 110 Vac, up to 5A load.

ADP-1102-10A

Boiler or tankless water heater — 110 Vac, up to 10A load. Confirm appliance nameplate before ordering.

See the ADP series page for full model lineup and wiring diagrams.

What's the difference between the HAC-F and the HAC-FS? +

The HAC-F is CSA certified. The HAC-FS uses the same damper body and actuator without CSA certification — it is for non-permitted applications where the AHJ genuinely does not require certification on the flue damper component.

On any permitted residential or commercial installation in Canada or the US where the AHJ will verify equipment, only the HAC-F satisfies the requirement. The difference between a certified and non-certified flue damper is a documented product qualification — an AHJ can and will verify it.

Never substitute the HAC-FS on a code-required flue application. The HAC-FS is not a cost-saving alternative on permitted jobs — it is a different product for a different application.

My flue is 10" or larger — which HAC-F do I order? +

Order the HAC-F Large Diameter series — Belimo TFB24 actuator, available in even-inch sizes from 10" through 30". Same Power Close / Spring Open fail-safe. Relay and end switch included on every unit.

The standard HAC-F (4"–9") uses the Hoyme patented SPC-F drive — the Hoyme drive is not rated for the torque required at 10" and above. The Belimo TFB24 is specified from 10" upward because it delivers the torque larger blade areas demand.

CSA certification is confirmed to 12". For 14"–30" on code-required applications, confirm AHJ acceptance before ordering. Odd-inch sizes not available in the standard range — contact Hoyme Manufacturing for non-standard diameters.

Why are the relay and end switch included on every unit — can I order without them? +

No — the relay and end switch are included on every HAC-F because a motorized flue damper installed without appliance interlock capability is an incomplete and unsafe installation. The end switch confirms the flue is clear before firing. The relay provides the switched output for the appliance safety circuit or ADP. Both are required for a complete interlock.

Rather than create configurations where a contractor could inadvertently order a flue damper without interlock capability, both components are included on every unit regardless of size. There is no version of the HAC-F without relay and end switch — the complete interlock-ready assembly is the product.

Can the HAC-F be used on a dryer exhaust? +

No. The HAC-F is designed for fuel-burning appliance flue and vent runs — not dryer exhaust. The dryer exhaust environment (elevated temperature, lint, high humidity) is outside the HAC-F's listed application. Lint accumulation in the motor assembly causes premature failure.

For gas dryer exhaust applications requiring back draft protection, use a BDH Back Draft Hood at the wall termination — designed for the dryer exhaust environment. For gas dryer interlock requirements, see the ADP series for the correct relay adaptor for your application.

Can I get a replacement Belimo TFB24 if the actuator fails on the large diameter unit? +

Yes — the Belimo TFB24 is widely stocked through Belimo distributors. The actuator mounts to the HAC-F damper body and can be replaced in the field without replacing the full damper assembly. Confirm the replacement actuator model matches the installed unit before ordering.

For the 4"–9" series, replacement Hoyme motor kits, microswitch kits, and spring return kits are stocked at Hoyme wholesalers — same service parts as the HAC and HOM lineup.

Who do I call if I'm unsure which product or configuration is right for my job? +

Call Hoyme technical support directly. Have your flue pipe diameter, appliance type, system voltage, and whether the job is permitted ready — the call is typically under five minutes and we'll confirm the right HAC-F size, series, and ADP model before you order.
